Alaipayuthey is a 2000 Tamil romantic film directed by Mani Ratnam, starring Madhavan and Shalini, the film explores the tensions of married life and the maturing of love. The film's score and soundtrack are composed by A. R. Rahman.
The music score that accompanies the film was composed by A. R. Rahman. It met widespread critical acclaim and is often considered to be one of Rahman's best soundtracks . Thus winning the Filmfare Best Music Director Award (Tamil) for 2000 .The soundtrack features 10 songs composed by Rahman, with lyrics by Vairamuthu, except for the title song "Alai Payuthey" (which was created by the 18th century Carnatic music composer Oothukkadu Venkatasubramanya Iyer, who also set it to the raagam Kaanada)
